What universe does Trent Lott think he lives in? As a white southerner I am appalled that a man or woman in a position of power (or not) would make a statement that might even be misconstrued as support for Jim Crow policies. Lott is the sort of smarmy, paternal, southern conservative that I do not like in the first place. He should make an opportunity to explain his comments pronto. If that doesn't calm the furor, then he should step down as majority leader.
